Positive third quarter at Veiling Rhein-Maas

8 October 2021

Veiling Rhein-Maas continues the good results of the year into the third quarter of 2021, and achieved a product turnover of € 359 million, which is an increase compared to the previous year. Like last year, the summer and holiday period had a positive impact on flower and plant sales, as many consumers spent their holidays at home. All sales channels of Veiling Rhein-Maas therefore recorded positive results in the third quarter of 2021.

Remaining high customer participation level
Encouragingly, customer participation in the auction room at site in Straelen-Herongen – still the heart of the auction – is increasing. At the same time, the digital purchasing channels of the marketplace are also developing positively. The share of the Remote Buying in the total auction sales continues to grow and reached almost 40% in the third quarter of 2021. Clock pre sales achieved an increase in product sales of 15% in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. In addition, the Clock Service once again contributed significantly to the overall results at Veiling Rhein-Maas. Especially cut flowers achieved an excellent price level during the summer months.

Popular products
Mainly roses as well as summer cut flowers were popular products during the summer, especially the Helianthus achieved consistently good prices. In the potted plants segment, the sales of indoor products were very satisfactory until mid of September. Among the autumn products so far Callunas have been in high demand as one of the main products – the sales of Chrysanthemum bushes and Cyclamen also went well. High-quality bowls and arrangements continue to be popular products among customers at the auction.

Logistical challenges
In the third quarter of 2021, it was not possible to provide all the logistical services to which the customers of the marketplace are accustomed. This situation is mainly due to a large shortage of employees on the side of the temporary employment agencies. The management and employees of Veiling Rhein-Maas have been working on various solutions (which were mentioned in the newsletter) since this situation arose, which has resulted in a slight stabilisation. Veiling Rhein-Maas thanks the customers for their understanding and support.

Personal contact at trade fairs and events
At the end of August 2021 Veiling Rhein-Maas attended a trade fair for the first time since the Corona pandemic, the Florall in Waregem (BE). The employees of Veiling Rhein-Maas are already looking forward to meeting more partners of the marketplace as well as potential customers and suppliers in person at upcoming trade fairs and events. The next opportunities will be at the Trade Fair in Aalsmeer (NL) at the beginning of November and probably at the IPM 2022 in Essen (DE).
