Current situation and market outlook

20 April 2020

After a very successful Valentine’s season the whole green industry was hit by an unprecedented event in the form of the Coronavirus. In week 12, the market was struck by a sudden plunge of demand affecting all product groups.

Effects on supply and demand
Cut flower volumes supplied to the marketplace in Straelen-Herongen in week 13 were reduced after intensive coordination between the employees of the Assortment and Import Management with both import and regional suppliers. The reduced volumes brought supply and demand back in balance and prices fortunately stabilised at Veiling Rhein-Maas.

Florist shops and garden centers are still open in Germany and the Netherlands. There is a satisfying customer demand, especially since people spend more time at home due to the movement restrictions still in place.

Lookout to the near future
Within the next weeks, cut flowers will face more competition from garden plants especially if the weather remains warm and sunny. If florist shops and garden centers remain open during the upcoming period, prices are expected to follow the usual patterns. However, customer demand will also depend on the given weather conditions.

The employees of the Assortment and Import Management will keep you informed about any new developments.
