Houseplant of the month
In May the `Houseplant of the month´ is the peace lily. The official name, Spathiphyllum, is derived from the Greek words for spathe and leaf. The peace lily originates from the tropical rainforests of Colombia and Venezuela, a real shade plant that likes a warm, damp environment. In a study by NASA, the peace lily stood out for its above-average air purifying qualities.
Flower Agenda
The `Flower Agenda´ focusses on the Alstroemeria in May. The Alstroemeria, also known as Inca lily, grows wild in Peru, Brazil and Chile. It symbolises enduring friendship and derives its unusual name from the Swede Clas Alstroemer, who brought the flower to Europe in the 18th century. Alstroemerias are strong flowers with a long sturdy stem, available in a rainbow of colours. One stem bears six to eight flowers, and the dark lines on the flower add an exotic detail.
Uplifting flower initiatives
Along with the #LETHOPEBLOOM campaign from the Flower Council of Holland, many other initiatives are currently being launched to show that flowers spread hope in these turbulent times. Take a look at the many uplifting flower initiatives here.
