Satisfying first quarter of 2022 at Veiling Rhein-Maas with kick-off of Standort 2025

8 April 2022

Veiling Rhein-Maas can look back on a generally positive first quarter of 2022, with product turnover of 106 million euros, the same as last year. Product turnover in the first two months was significantly higher than in the previous year, but both volume and turnover fell short of expectations in March. The weather, rising energy prices as well as the situation in the world affected sales in March. The beautiful sunny weather led to greater customer interest in potted plants and a slightly reduced interest in cut flowers.

Standort 2025 project starts
“In the first quarter of 2022, the Standort 2025 project kicked off with all the companies involved at the business premises in Straelen-Herongen. The objective of this project is to work together to position the entire marketplace attractively for the future,” explain Günther Esser and Cees Hoekstra, Managing Directors of Veiling Rhein-Maas. “The concept will be worked out this spring, so it will be clear in the summer how the entire marketplace might look in the near future, and how we can keep providing a reliable and profitable marketplace for our customers and suppliers.”

Sales situation
The number of customers in the auction hall in Straelen-Herongen remains stable. At the same time, the popularity of the digital sales channels - Remote Buying, Clock pre sales and Webshop - is still growing steadily. For example, Webshop sales increased significantly in the first quarter of 2022. All bedding and balcony plants in general, and spring bloomers such as primroses and pansies in particular, were popular with customers on the marketplace. Tulips also achieved very good prices until the weather changed in March. The challenging situation in the energy and transport sectors affected the supply of roses, but this was better and more stable than expected.

Current investments in the business premises
Veiling Rhein-Maas is investing in the auction to modernise the premises for the future. In the first quarter, the entire concrete floor of connecting axis BE2 was replaced, and the chain conveyor was repaired. The cashier’s desk/office and many office spaces in the halls and in the main building were also modernised.

Changes to auction groups
The structure and system of the auction groups at Veiling Rhein-Maas were changed on 1 January 2022. This extensive change was successfully completed at the beginning of the year without any technical problems. “We’d like to thank our suppliers again for the good cooperation during this change,” said Günther Esser and Cees Hoekstra.

Customer portal pilot phase
The development of the Veiling Rhein-Maas customer portal was given the definitive green light last year. The customer portal creates services and online opportunities for customers, and represents an investment in the digital future of our marketplace. About 30 customers have been testing this customer portal in a test environment since the beginning of April. Feedback from the testers will be used to optimise the functions and operation of the customer portal step by step. The customer portal is expected to be activated for all customers in June 2022.
